Under Cross City
The ground around Cross City.
Dixie County is low country. The Suwannee River forms its eastern edge on the way to the Gulf, and much of the county is flat pine flatwoods and swamp with a high water table, running down to the coast at Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee.
The Big Bend has taken direct hits from recent hurricanes: Idalia came ashore just up the coast near Keaton Beach in August 2023, and storm surge along this coast floods wells that sit low.
The water
Hard limestone water, plus iron and tannin color from the swamps in some areas, and sulfur smell in many wells. Near the coast, storm surge and saltwater are real concerns for a well.
Permits
Dixie County is in the Suwannee River Water Management District. After a flood, follow the Florida Department of Health in Dixie County’s guidance before drinking well water.
My Dixie County well flooded in a storm. What now?
Don’t drink the water until it has been disinfected and tested; use bottled water. Don’t turn the pump back on if its wiring or control box was underwater; have it checked first. Then call for service and follow the county health department’s guidance.
Will my well work on a generator after a hurricane?
Usually, if the generator can handle the pump’s starting surge and voltage (most well pumps are 240 volts) and it is connected through a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. Never backfeed through an outlet, and run the generator outdoors only.
